If the Post says it, you gotta believe it, no? This is very interesting:
“The Life name is getting a new lease on life.
After having shut down three times as a magazine, the Life title isbeing resurrected as part of a joint venture between Time Inc. andGetty Images that will launch a Web site offering free, downloadablephotos from world-renowned photographers.
For Time Inc., the venture is a bit of a gamble, as the publisherhas tried repeatedly to resuscitate the venerable magazine that startedas an oversize glossy in 1936.
It most recently shut down in April 2007 as a newspaper supplement.
For Getty, which was taken over by Silicon Valley venture firmHellman & Friedman for $2.4 billion in July, the deal is a chanceto battle the inroads that the Internet had made into its mainprofessional photo market by aiming for the consumer market for thefirst time.
Only consumers who use the images for non-commercial purposes willbe permitted to tap into the photos, which will include 3,000 newdownloads from Getty plus the extensive archives from both Getty andthe original Life magazine.”
What does it all mean? How will the images be free- will there be advertising? How will they control usage? It all makes my head spin.
In any case, the arrangement of covers above is from Magnum’s blog, back in November ’07. Here are the credits:

Again? How many times are they going to go through this. Free photos!! Jeezus how are photogs supposed to stay in business if everything is free!
Rachel,
That’s a pretty nice collection of covers.
It reminds me of the personal sacrifices that Magnum photographers, like Burt Glinn and Elliot Erwitt made in order to secure copyright ownership and photographer’s credits in LIFE back in the 1950′s.
Of course all of their efforts (they were both black-balled at the time) have been undone with this deal.
