There are so many photo-based recollections of the inauguration that my head is swimming just trying to keep up. If you want your head to swim too, check out CNN’s 3D Photosynth extravaganza, dubbed “the moment”.
I’d rather keep it simple and compile shots of Malia taking shots. It’s so meta, you know?
And I’m not the only one who’s noticed. We’re already hearing all about the purple Kodak easyshare camera that Malia is trolling DC with.
J Crew and Kodak win the product placement wars. But here’s what I’m wondering; is Malia hooked? Is she now one of us, a photographer until the end? If so, it’s time for the lobbying to begin. Maybe Malia can get us a cabinet member– a Secretary of the Arts, perhaps. Or even a rebirth of the FSA. Lord knows there’s some depression out there to document….
OK, enough musing. Here’s Malia being cute and clever:

Think what this kid (with all that access!) could do with a 5D?!

I’ve been talking to a lot of photographers about this. Should we start a foundation to give malia an slr of some sort?
I know they could buy her one if they wanted one, but one from the photographic arts community with out blessing might mean more. I mean, most of us started on an old inherited pentax, right?
I’m not sure why these make me so happy. She needs a blog! It would be really neat to see her perspective on everything.
You know, throughout this entire process I’ve often wondered what it would be like to experience so many epic events at such a young age.
Maybe she could borrow Pete Souza’s 5D Mk II
I also was noticing her constant use of the camera and wondered if she would be one of our number some day. And then I had the reaction that I always feel, in my perpetual conflict with shooting. I was like “don’t take so many pictures, live it, feel it, you’re a part of it”. I’ve never been able to participate in something and document it simultaneously.
I think it’s fine that she’s using a point and shoot, she clearly is comfortable with it and that’s what matters at this point. When she’s ready for an SLR I’m sure someone will present her with one.
Now that is one cool kid!!!
I would love to see the photos she shot to see how such an amazing day played out through her eyes!
I’ve noticed this, too. You can see that relentless story-telling side of her that wants to document things and preserve them. I think its cool…you can tell her parents are encouraging her, too.
I was watching her with the camera at the inauguration too . . . I think she’s taking videos with that thing–at least some of the time.
And I don’t think a 12 year old really wants to carry an slr around–I don’t even want to carry one around all the time. She’d probably be fine with a G10.
I have been dying to see the photos she is taking! I agree, she needs a blog.
It usually takes the teen years to think SLRs are cool… we just need to wait a bit until she’s a more weathered shooter
I’ve been watching this too, if she keeps shooting the whole 8 years just imagine the book wow. I’d love to see what she’s getting she needs a blog but it probably wouldn’t be allowed
Yes! I vote for a G10, too. And how could she NOT be one of us? Just look at her! She has the documentarian’s eye. I started out documenting like that, too… only I was out with my friends at karaoke, not at the inauguration of my father. So exciting! Yet another reason to love the Obamas.

Nice reporting Rachel!
Yes, it is true she is one of us.
There was an article in DC about “things about the Obama girls”.
And it quoted as Malia’s hobby and love of photography.
What a cool blog that would be ? I agree.
Great site, how do I subscribe?
