There was an article in DC about “things about the Obama girls”.
And it quoted as Malia’s hobby and love of photography.

Yes! I vote for a G10, too. And how could she NOT be one of us? Just look at her! She has the documentarian’s eye. I started out documenting like that, too… only I was out with my friends at karaoke, not at the inauguration of my father. So exciting! Yet another reason to love the Obamas.

I’ve been watching this too, if she keeps shooting the whole 8 years just imagine the book wow. I’d love to see what she’s getting she needs a blog but it probably wouldn’t be allowed

I have been dying to see the photos she is taking! I agree, she needs a blog.
It usually takes the teen years to think SLRs are cool… we just need to wait a bit until she’s a more weathered shooter

I was watching her with the camera at the inauguration too . . . I think she’s taking videos with that thing–at least some of the time.
And I don’t think a 12 year old really wants to carry an slr around–I don’t even want to carry one around all the time. She’d probably be fine with a G10.

I’ve noticed this, too. You can see that relentless story-telling side of her that wants to document things and preserve them. I think its cool…you can tell her parents are encouraging her, too.

I also was noticing her constant use of the camera and wondered if she would be one of our number some day. And then I had the reaction that I always feel, in my perpetual conflict with shooting. I was like “don’t take so many pictures, live it, feel it, you’re a part of it”. I’ve never been able to participate in something and document it simultaneously.
I think it’s fine that she’s using a point and shoot, she clearly is comfortable with it and that’s what matters at this point. When she’s ready for an SLR I’m sure someone will present her with one.
