I encountered Mena yesterday in the glossy webpages of New York Magazine, and she reminded me that I wanted to talk about reality. Or, rather– reality shows about photography.
Because there is one now, from USA, and one in the works, from Bravo.
Mena was talking about snakes at the launch of USA’s Character Project, which as far as I can tell, documents a summer of art stars on a road trip. I’m hoping for some Road Rules-esque dramz…. I can only imagine the uproar Mary Ellen Mark will cause when she eats the last of the RV’s peanut Butter. Sylvia Plachy is gonna be Pissed.
In any case, these folks certainly took some pictures. Here’s the full roster:
Dawoud Bey
Anna Mia Davidson
Jeff Dunas
David Eustace
Joe Fornabaio
Mary Ellen Mark
Eric McNatt
Eric Ogden
Sylvia Plachy
Richard Renaldi
Marla Rutherford
I decided we’d play a little game, called: Name that USA Network photographer! I’ve lettered the images below. Each is a shot from a particular photographer’s project. These folks all have pretty individual styles, so it should be easy.

Nice collection of photographs! THanks for sharing.
So I think this is an interesting way to introduce people to the world of photography- but with anything I am disappointed when there is a new reality show genre brought about. From a teaching point of view this may serve in parts as a good tool for the classroom.
I have seen some of the commercials for this on the USA network and I do look forward to seeing how they will format the show. I am hopeful that they spend some time letting the artists do some talking and explaining. It would also be nice to get some time to hear what the subjects think about being included in the artists work. I look forward to giving the show a try and hope it turns out to be decent.
