When I grow up I might want to shoot catalogs for Williams-Sonoma, so I’ve been carrying around a DSLR lately and practicing a bit. I just pretend I’m someone awesome like Emily Nathan, and shoot lots of verticals. It’s fun. I’m still working on my juxtapositions- I think more than half this kind of work is about the editing.
I even made it to Camp Fernwood; I’d meant to go earlier in the summer to embed myself among the campers and memories of my youth, but there was swine flu. At least the taxidermy stayed put so I could shoot it.
Anyhoo- here are some that I think work:

Fernwood Camp I'll Ever Loyal Be.
These next few I give a B-. Something’s not quite working. It may have been that I got bored of editing. That happens.

Also I like this one horizontal:

My mom’s a good diver. I think she got a 9.3 on this one.
Do YOU make a living shooting lifestyle? Write to me and tell me all about it!

Why would anyone *leave* this place, beautiful! Got back from a two week stint on an island off Maine.
I just stopped by for an innocent read and discovered this nice shout out. So what are you like when you are me shooting? One thing that often happens when I am shooting is that I am in constant conversation (while taking pictures or before and after) with the subjects.
Perhaps these images are between lifestyle and art- characterizing lifestyle as a place where the viewer is meant to mingle at the party (as any one of various types of guests) in opposition to art where there is a stronger implied commentary on what is happening at the party/home/culture or documentary where the “truth” or “real story” or political opinion is expressed. Certainly I have garbled my metaphors here but you get my idea?
I love your lifestyle shots! You are a natural!

These are awesome! I
‘m hating horizontals a lot lately myself but keep shooting them for some reason. Then I hate myself and want to crawl into a cave forever. I even bought a grip for easier vertical shooting (really dislike twisting my wrist over my forehead) but it makes the DSLR so freaking big and heavy that I barely use it..
these shots looks great rachel ! williams sonoma look no further …
