When I was an undergrad, we were tasked in art class with keeping a journal of daily visual inspiration. I was never very good at it. I tried really hard to come up with creative things, but they usually felt forced and uninspired. Then I’d end up the night before the journal review with a Vogue, a Red Bull and a pair of scissors.
I only had one really good page to show for all of freshman year. It was a page my friend had done for me, consisting of strips of a magazine ad cut into tiny vertical strips, like blinds. It was cooler than anything I could ever have come up with.
These pictures by Frederique Daubal remind me of that.










They are cool. And, in turn, they remind me of this portriat sculpture in Guatemala, which I think is equally innovative:
