Now that pregnancy has finally ended, I’m embarking on the photographing-my-son-too-much journey. I purchased a Canon EOS-3 on Ebay so that my clichéd efforts can at least be memorialized on film. $150 for one of those things, and you can develop at CVS! What’s not to like?

Looking back, this is the only pregnant shot that did anything for me:

Pregnancy and baby pictures can go very wrong. Perhaps its the hormones which lead to very bad decisions.

Once the baby in the mirror becomes a reality, you have to choose how to memorialize it.

Turns out I like hipstamatic enough to use it for my major life moment. I wonder how this will read in the album in ten years.

I have no decent shots of myself looking maternal, but I did get a nice shot of a swell friend being a mother to my child. She looks much more pulled together than I did.

My favorite baby picture in recent memory is Torbjorn Rodland‘s. I had to pull three Blindspots down off the shelf to recall this image.

But he’s blonde and Nordic and perfect, so it was worth it.

Rodland also has a grasp on the finer points of motherhood. Do you think she really just had a baby? I doubt it. And that looks like a painful latch.

I will try my best not to bother you too much further with child imagery.

He recently blew up some game consoles for Fortune Magazine. I’ll let him tell it:

“I was recently brought on by Armin Harris for a job with Fortune Magazine. The story was about console gaming’s demise. We came up with a concept to incorporate still and video footage of exploding consoles and controllers, particularly Xbox 360′s, for the story. The shoot took place at a pyrotechnics studio in Brooklyn called J and M Special Effects. The location was great because they have a permanent NYC explosives permit as well as a pyrotechnician on staff. Below is a behind the scenes video of the initial set up.”

These flowers remind me of the classic Martin Klimas flower torture pictures.

I went over to check out what Martin has been up to recently. Apparently he is mad at his china doll collection.

And now advertisers are getting in on the trend: BBDO in Milan is using exploding beauty in their ads for Palladium theater.

Luckily, some flowers are being left intact. William Rugen found some specimens at the local fair that were being judged on their perfection.

I’d give first place to the Zinnea in the middle. You?

He’ll even tell you how he did it.

“A new approach (for me) to action pictures – the camera on a stand, preset focus, a rather large DoF (small aperture), managing the feather toy with the right hand and the camera remote with the left. To get technically good pictures (sharp ones) was easier than I had imagined.”

Also, there are cats and TVs. Eat your heart out!

Now go eat fruit cake.

I’m a flyer. I don’t quite understand how anyone would not choose flying, especially a photographer. Unless, I suppose, you’re a photojournalist trying to peruse North Korea. Then invisibility would be rather handy.

Here are my two favorite images for right now. They are emblematic for me bc:

1. I got a sunburn the weekend before my wedding (smooth move), and now I am combating a peeling back with days to go.

2. I feel as though my head has been cut off, like a chicken’s (or like Ms. Liberty’s). So I am running around without one.
