Excellent mailbag submission today. This is from Jan Schreiber, who is hopping cargo ships and making some beautiful, hazy, watery work:

Last year I decided to explore Australia. I bought a ticket aboard a Cargo Ship and embarked on my 2 month journey. By the time I reached the Australian shore, I had taken over 250 shots of the sea and the ships and islands passing by.

I spent weeks editing the proofs and finally ended up with a collection of 14 images.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE SHORES is the title of this project.

As you all probably know by now, I’m absolutely crazed this summer because I am planning my wedding while both pregnant and while shooting lots of other peoples’ weddings. It’s almost hard to find time for a nap.

My own day of nuptial bliss is bearing down upon me and I can’t wait for it to be over!

I am also attending my fair share of matrimonial celebrations. The most recent one was down in Rock Hall, Maryland, and was photographed by two of my very favorite people in the world, Ashley Macknica and Joel Barhamand, of A Couple of Cameras.

Remember a few weeks ago when I was asking about a portable lighting solution for outdoor shoots? And I was curious about the Profoto Pro Acute B 600R?

Well, Joel and Ashley use one, and they love it. I got excited to show you, so I took a lot of bad pictures of their setup with my snappy snap (G9, why do you stink so much for me)?!

Here is a peek.

Ril nice. Ashley and Joel also do a swell photobooth setup like all the cool kids these days, and I got in there with the best of them. Here is a shoddy picture of it. (I love a mask.)

Tulips on a Scanner and Sand in the Living Room.

I hate it when I go to the beach and then for weeks afterward there’s sand in the bed. You just can’t get rid of it. So it must be REALLY galling to have sand in your house like this.

Lanzarote/Barcelona-based photographer Alvaro Sanchez-Montañes has been documenting houses that over time have been invaded by sand in the Namib desert.

They’re a little bit amazing.

And since we’re on a flower/nature kick this week, I thought I’d share the scanner creations of Carmen van den Eyne. Sort of like updated photograms.

Christine Caldwell Gets Crafty.

For my bachelorette party I went upstate with some pals. We ate nectarines and listened to Duran Duran and made sunprints. I didn’t get boozy because I am already knocked up (sorry mom, I almost made it to the alter).

Anyway, those sunprints really brought me back… to making sunprints. When I was little.

They’re pretty much just magic.

You know who else makes magic images from nature without a camera? Christine Caldwell. She uses some good old plants and animal bits and a good old enlarger and then= SUPER MAGIC.

Here’s how she describes them:

“Illuminated Negatives” are a collection of limited edition color photograms consisting of leaves, flowers and insects. No camera, film, or computer is used in their creation. I print them myself in the darkroom using a dichroic enlarger and color photographic paper.

Here are the steps!

1. After many hours of adjusting the enlarger in combination with the specimen’s natural color and the color paper, the final palette emerges.

2. The specimen is placed on the paper in total darkness.

3. The paper is processed.

4. Voila! The final result.

LOOK!

amazing (my image insert widget made a haphazard grid. i thought it was sort of charming so I left it. i’m sorry if it annoys you.)

I would like the butterflies in three straight lines on my wall, large. Christine, can you hook me up? OR 20×200! You do an edition, please.

It will make many people happy.

In the Studio: Fashion Maven Craig McDean

Newest claim to fame: the lady who cuts my hair also cuts fashion photographer Craig McDean‘s hair. Isn’t that just fantastic? I found this out last week and knew I would have to do some sort of related post. But I couldn’t find any pictures of Mr. McDean’s head, so I thought instead I’d sneak up on him in the studio.

Here are two fun videos of Mr. McDean at work.

And here are some snazzy shots of Marion Cotillard pouring milk into a bottle and crawling around on the ground. You can see yet another behind-the-scenes vid of this over at Another Magazine.

The Plight of the Unpaid Photo Intern (Continues).

Who here was ever an unpaid intern for a photographer? OH, all of us?! Well, then we know it can be pretty awful (unless you’re working for Andy French).

A buddy of mine, Sophia, just finished her first, fabulous unpaid gig for a undeserving individual. She did not enjoy the job.

Let’s help Sophia get at least something out of this; watch her video and vote for her so she can win $500 to Macy’s for telling her worst work/intern experience.

Oh, and feel free to tell us here about YOUR worst experience. I bet there are some doozies.
