APB/Profoto Interview: Hikida Sayaka

As we do every month, we’re going to check in with one of the winners of Profoto‘s Assistant Contest. As you may notice, Profoto helps support this outfit, and we like to check in on what they’re doing. This month we chat with Hikida Sayaka.

You may notice a bit of a language gap, but I’m guessing we’ll all find it charming.

Tell me a little about your background. How did you start shooting?

I was a magazine and book editor a few years ago. I liked photos and suddenly realized that I should be a photographer. I’m thinking my roots of photo is my mother.

It’s very simple.

My mother’s always took photos of my brother and sister and me. She put our unique photos on the walls so I had the chance to see many photos in my childhood. Photos are a part of my life.

What’s your favorite/strongest body of work (or the work you feel most defines you)?

I have two main works of photos. One is taking children. I focus on brightness of kids Each kid has his/her own great personality, I mean brightness. I believe that. Photos of kids remind grown-ups of original brightness!

And the other is taking Europe area. This work is kind of hobby.

What’s next for you, in 2011 and beyond?

I’d like to develop the kids fashion photos as a business in a few years. And I’d like to try to take photos of kids in the great nature scene by myself, so that I’m traveling around Tokyo!

Jan Schreiber: Somewhere Between the Shores.

Excellent mailbag submission today. This is from Jan Schreiber, who is hopping cargo ships and making some beautiful, hazy, watery work:

Last year I decided to explore Australia. I bought a ticket aboard a Cargo Ship and embarked on my 2 month journey. By the time I reached the Australian shore, I had taken over 250 shots of the sea and the ships and islands passing by.

I spent weeks editing the proofs and finally ended up with a collection of 14 images.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE SHORES is the title of this project.

The interwebs are a-flutter today with talk of Sydney’s unprecedented and bizarre red dust storm. Flickr’s blog alerted me to many special pictures of the storm, and I’ve been trapped in a red, dusty haze for hours. Studio Visit Friday! Your Host: Dan Saelinger.

This is your friendly neighborhood photographer, Dan Saelinger. Dan’s done a great job of carving a niche for himself in the industry with his still life and conceptual editorial work. He’s also a cheerleader for other photographers- he writes a super helpful blog, and teaches at SVA and Maine Photographic Workshops.

I first touched base with Dan over on Shoot! when he scored a PDN cover; check it out.

And this time, I got to go into his studio. I thought you might like to come with, so I brought my snappy cam. Voyeuristic fun, here we come!

Entering the studio... Saelinger originals are on the walls. The studio is in the heart of Chinatown.

In case clients get snacky, there are lots of goldfish crackers. Also things to read.

These are to be used in an upcoming personal project. They scared me a little.

Lighting, lighting!

The shooting area was lined with plastic. Tests with liquids were happening later. Sort of felt like the set of Dexter (awesome).
